About Us
The UK Society for Medical Oncology (UKSMO), formerly known as the Association of Cancer Physicians (ACP), is recognised by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) and the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), and equivalent bodies in the devolved nations, as the specialty association for medical oncologists. As a registered charity, we promote excellence in Cancer Care, Education and Training, and Research and Innovation. We also help shape the future of patient-centred cancer care, and act as a representative stakeholder to the Government, the DHSC and the NHS. Our new name better reflects our remit and is consistent with those of our international counterparts.
The Executive Committee [LINK TO Executive Committee] is made up of elected medical oncologists and residents-in-training, representing the views and concerns of the membership across the 4 nations of the UK.
Membership of the UKSMO gives medical oncologists an independent voice in the affairs of the RCP, the Intercollegiate Oncology Forum and the Specialty Advisory Committee (SAC), who supervise training and accreditation.
Through this, we:
- Promote the views and interests of medical oncologists to the DHSC and RCP
- Influence policy on consultant expansion
- Help in the development of training curricula and the specialty examination
- Participate in NICE appraisal and guideline development
- Encourage the development of best practice to benefit patients
Through the UKSMO Academy, we organise annual educational meetings for residents-in-training, early career Consultants, and Consultant members. In addition, we host regular webinars, e-learning, and courses to support continued professional development. [LINK TO Early Career Consultants page]. There is an annual AGM [Link to AGM page] which currently takes place virtually to ensure all our members have a voice in how the society is run.
