Constitution
The UK Society for Medical Oncology (UKSMO), formerly known as the Association of Cancer Physicians (ACP), is a registered charity in England and Wales, whose main objectives are to promote excellence in cancer care, education and training, research and innovation, to support professional collaboration, and to advocate for medical oncologists and people living with or beyond cancer across the UK.

UKSMO Constitution
The UKSMO Constitution sets out the Society’s purpose, governance, membership, leadership, and decision-making processes.
In summary, the Constitution outlines:
- Governance: The Society is overseen by a Board of Trustees and managed by an Executive Committee comprising elected officers (Chair, Deputy Chair, Secretary and Treasurer) together with other committee members. The Trustees are responsible for strategic direction, governance, financial oversight, and ensuring the Society fulfils its charitable objectives.
- Membership: The Constitution defines the Society’s membership categories—ordinary, honorary, overseas, associate and retired members—and sets out the eligibility criteria, subscription arrangements, members’ responsibilities, and disciplinary procedures.
- Leadership and appointments: It describes the terms of office, duties and responsibilities of the Society’s officers and committee members, together with the transparent nomination and election processes used for appointments.
- Meetings and decision-making: The Constitution explains how Annual General Meetings (AGMs), Extraordinary General Meetings (EGMs), voting procedures, constitutional amendments, and other Society business are conducted.
- Other provisions: It includes arrangements for trustee disqualification and removal, dissolution of the Society, confidentiality of meetings, support for resident doctors and early career consultants, and an appendix detailing the designated committee roles.
Overall, the Constitution provides the legal and operational framework for the UKSMO, ensuring that the Society is governed transparently, fulfils its charitable purposes, and effectively represents medical oncologists while advancing high-quality, equitable patient-centred cancer care across the UK.
